LogBook 01 = Dec. 17, 2011 to Feb. 11, 2012| We now open up another Logbook page. Seems page 3 almost is all the valve job. That was a major, major part of the restoration. Still, we are on the mechanical workings of the old antique. We are still under the hood and underbody. Now, it's time for the transmission and rear. So, let's move on... |
03-19-12 Now that the Valve Job is finished, it's move on to the transmission. Seems the trans has kept the fluid. I bet the seals have expanded, and is doing what they should. But, after 50 years, it seems I should still have the seals replaced and have the trans checked. Inside and out. Sam is one of the best transmission mechanics. I knew him from my 20's, and he's one of the best. So, appointment will be made to take the car over and get the trans serviced. Maybe I can get video, maybe not. I don't think he will have a problem with filming, but the problem is work. We'll see... I ordered the two gaskets for the carb. The old one, under the carb dosen't look that good, and the one under the plate, I will replace just because it's old. The motor has a slight hesitation on excelleration. Might be the gasket leaking air. The gaskets are only like 4 bucks. I also greased the linkage, and the pedel dosen't seem to be as hard. Now, it's complete sam's printer, and take the car over for the trans work. Then it's on to the differential oil change. Then, it's start on the front end. Shock towers, and front wall. At that point, we will be into the body rust repairs. I am a bit scared about what I will find when the fenders (both of them) come off. I was looking at the shock towers, and what looks like there is a heavy sheet metal border along with body metal. But, we will find out. Now, there will probally be a delay in entries to this LogBook because at this point it's waiting for Sam. Depending on how good I do with his special printer (no software or USB cables). So, until next time...
03-20-12 Purchased another led sub bottle. Be filling the car up again soon. Hopefully, all the rust dist will be gone with this fill up. Picked up the carb gaskets. Will install them most likely late Thursday.
03-21-12 Installed the exhaust "doughnut" today, off the exhaust manifold. No problems... I spent a little time to check out the voltage regulator, now that the head lights are working. The car is charging, but, the charging-useage consumption (amps) dosen't seem correct. If the head lights are on and the brake lights, at idle, the voltage does drop. I suppose, it's not going to be a constant at all times, but it does hit 15.5. A bit high, although that happens in a very short time, then drops back. Tomorrow, if enough of time, I'll clean up the contacts on the voltage regulator and generator. I think I also may add a ground line from the battery to body. I don't like the fact that the ground goes through the engine first and body ground is at the rear of the motor. It would be better if the battery went directly to body ground. I'll look in the book tonight and see if there is a voltage regulator adjustment. Seems to me there should be a fast or slow reaction adjustment as pertioned to the consumption of current through the regulator. Tomorrow we head over to sams and see if I can complete his computer job. Till next time. Chow!.
03-22-12 Got Sam's stuff working, and I will be taking the car over to his shop next Thursday for the transmission work. He also is allowing filming, and I will have the work most likely in fast motion on You Tube with his address and all. Most likely, editing will take a couple of days as he said it could be a two day thing. Hopefully, I can have someone over there and film while I am at work. Vic and Skippy come over today. We installed the two carb gaskets to see if that will take care of the short hesitation from a dead stop. It did. Now, the motor is running even better... Filled up the tank again. The rust clouding, that wasen't bad, seems to have gone away. Thats good, now the tank is just about to the condition it should be. Disconnected the pos battery lead and cleaned up the voltage regulator and generator contacts. The regulator and generator seem to work as they should. All seems well at this point. I also added the body ground like I said above. That seems to help. Coming back from the meet, I noticed the voltage did stay within the requirements. At least, the headlights diden't get candle type of light... Saw Rick a few days ago. He runs the Jersey Cape Crusiers. All of the guys (and Gals) meet at the Sonic on Rt9 in Rio Grande. He heard about my car, and convinced me to bring it over, even though it isen't show quality. I am glad I did. It got a lot of attention.
Vic, has a 1955 Crown Vic. Back then there was a model known as the Crown Vic Fairlane. Then in 1962, Ford took the Fairlane name from the Crown Vic and started the new Fairlane line. Here is a picture of the 62 with Vic's 55. (below)
Earlier, when we were working on the carb problem. Vic brought along his old vacuum guage meter for checking vacuum on the engine. As you can see it's just about right on the spot now. Good thing!.
The 62 had a lot of thumbs up. had a lot of looks, and comments. The signs in the windows was a nice touch to a otherwise un finished restoration. Matter of fact, the car got some nice likes over there. And, there was people taking pictures. I am glad I drive it over to the meet. I know the motor is in great shape, and the transmission did real good too. But, we are still going to take the car to Sam's to have the trans checked and new fluid, seals and all. LOL, I suppose I took the car to it's first car show?. Not only the owners was there but people was stopping and walking around looking. The meets at Sonic are also for the owners to talk, and some of us can talk. LOL.... Till next entry, See ya later!.
03-24-12 Today rain is forcasted. The sky's are cloudy, and it looks like rain. Hasen't rained yet, but it sure look's like it. I was going to check into the exhaust. There is a leak, probally around the muffler. Seems, the pipe from the motor where it connects to the muffler was already fix, and the way it was fixed was they cut off that area and pushed the muffler a little further up the pipe. Thats why the hanger is tight, like there is no play room between the muffler and the hanger. The complete exhaust system is supposed to have some "play room" for the exhaust system to move. The way this is now, isen't enough for the system to have play room. That will be fixed another day when It's not going to rain. So, today while it was sprinkling out, I desided to see about the non working dash lights. Simple change of light bulbs, and some cleaning of the dimmer on the headlight switch. Changing the 4 little light bulbs isen't as easy as you would think. The bulbs was easy to change, but getting to them was the problem, and putting the socket holder back into the dash holes right was a difficult task because of the room. After removing almost, the complete dash I was able to pull the light sockets from the top with the panel slanted toward me from the top. Trying to get to them from under the dash isen't as easy as one would think. The below picture was taken around 8PM, when it was dark. The dash is lit up green, as that was a color that was supposed to be easier on your eyes, so they thought. If you remember the first computer monitors, they were also green. green only. That was also thought to be easier on the eyes. A little history for ya.... But, the dash looks good now, and the re-o-stat (Dimmer) is also working good. Cleaned that up with some contact cleaner.
03-26-12 Diden't do anything to the car today or yesterday. it's been cold and damp, and blaa out. Not to mention of the threat of rain, and sprinkeling... At this point, I am waiting to take the car over to Sams. I don't know if thats going to happen this week or not. I have a Doctors appointment on Thursday in the morning, and I suppose we will take the day from there. I left a message with Sam. If he wants, I can bring the car over on Wednesday after work, A little past 3PM. If he calls back and saids okay, I will take the car to work, and then take it over when I get out of work. Then, I can head over there after the Docs on Thursday. I really don't want to miss two weeks just waiting on the trans work. Those nice days cut out of winter, means a lot. Remember, after the trans, it's the exhaust, and the rear oil, and then it's on to the body work. Stay tuned...
03-30-12 The car is at Sams. Waiting to be worked on. I drive it over there Thursday. He wasen't in, so I left him a note, and left the keys. He's a bit busy, and I am sure it's going to wait until he get's to it. When I get it back, I will list here. But I don't want to start the body until the trans is checked and seals and all changed. Once I start the body, it can't be driven. In the interm time, I will be getting together some specialty body tools that I will need. After I get some bills paid. This LogBook will be idel for a time, just how long, I don't know.
04-06-12 Well, sitting here waiting for Sam to get to the car. While I have some down time, I was playing with the web site and learning some new programs, and some new hardware for my computer. Will help me keep better track of the restoration. Looks like Thursday. I will also be able to take videos, that is, if he's not too busy with other work. Cleaned up the cars space here at the house. Made a better exhaust dirvision away from the house. Looking into some body tools I'll need soon. So, really, it's not that bad. Time to get me ready for it's return and continueing on the car. Till next time.
04-12-12 This Thursday he said he will do the 62, and I will be filming and pictures. I will be going over there at 10AM. Getting the tires changed and balanced at the other place will have to happen the following Thursday, unless I can set it up where I can drop off the car the following evening- afternoon. I'll have to find out if i can do that. Nothing else to report. It's wait until thats done, and then it's on to the body... These couple of weeks werent all wasted. I got my computer more space, and less cluttered, and now ready for video editing and such. Till then.
04-19-12 Sam was able to pick away at the transmission little by little while it's over at has shop. He did remove the trans clean it up. Replaced the seals, they were leaking, The servo, all the soft parts (rubber) and the trans was missing some bolts. Wonder where some of the bolts went?. Probally loosened and fell out. I did find a lot of loose bolts while I was working on the car. He also cleaned the caseing, and the inside parts. He's now waiting on a "Modulator" to be delivered for the shifting thingy. I was not able to video, I figured that, because he was working on the trans in-between his paid jobs, and I knew it was going to take a while. it's still over there waiting on a part. He's having trouble getting the exact year modulator part, but, he did manage to find a 64 modulator, that needs to be modifyed. He's going to try to do that today. But in the while, we wait. While I was over there, I had a good look under the body, as it was up on the lift. I took a video of the under, and found a couple more of the floor board rust around the seat mounts in the back. Still, not too bad, but more patching to the car will need to be done.. While he's waiting for the modulator, he said he was going to re-pack the front wheel bearings, and see if he can replace the right side bearing. The wheel does rock a little, warn bearing. He also said he's going to replace the diferantal oil. He has a sucker to remove the old oil, since there is no drain for this. He agreed, after 50 years it also should be replaced.
04-20-12 Sam still has the car. It's not done yet... A couple of things left to do to it. Just have to stand by, and wait.... I am getting together some other things for the car while the down time is here. More about that later.
04-21-12 Picked up a carpet (for free) that may or may not be a good fit in the 62. It looks like it will be a good fit. So, since it was free, I thought I would take the chance. I cleaned it up a bit, and left it to dry on the line. After it dries, I'll put it away until I get to that part of the restoration. Came from a 1986 Crown Vic. Will probally have to trim, and make new seat holes. But the width, sure seems like it, the length, is a question mark. But it measures okay. Until I get to that part, it's drying on the line and I'll put it away after a couple of rains and sunny days.
04-22-12 Rain, Rain... Okay to rain, haven't had much of it. The car is not here, and it can rain. The rug is out back getting a good rain clean. I found where there is the exhaust leak. It on the input of the muffler. Found them at Advanced, 30 bucks. They are in stock, and I'll be changing that in the coming days. Have to measure and see what the length is. Found a antiuque auto junk yard in Colorado Springs, CO. He has three 4 door Fairlanes. Not the 500, but the standard fairlanes. Has 1/4 panels on all of them, and I have a emial into him for prices of the 1/4's including the trunk pockets and including behind the back door area. If they are inexpensive enough I'll get them for when I'm ready... They also have decent shock towers too. But, we will wait until I find out the real condition of the shock towers. I am helping Vic with his 55 change out a motor. I am also filimg the swap and when complete will be on You Tube. So, my car plus his car is also in between work and other functions... Hopefully, I'll get my car back this week... We'll see... Chow!
04-25-12 The car is finished from Sam's... I desided before I start on the body, I should get the tires changed and balanced. I also want to check the rims inside. I made arraingements with the Tech School to change out the tires and do wheel balanceing. The old "test" tires comes off, and the rim will be inspected for rust, and checked around the bead area for rust, and adnormalities. When I changed over to the test tires from the dry rotted tires there was a issue with rust inside the rim. Seems one of the snow tires was put on with some water inside and did somewhat of a rust number to inside of the rim. I want to be sure all is good so far. One of the better test tires will be the spare, and the good tires (with white walls) will be placed on the rims and balanced. Then, I can bring her home and start the body work. So far, in my collections, I aquirered trunk material, from a 86 that has the wheel in the center behind the seat. I have a feeling I'll be able to use it. The carpeting. I also may have the inside "pocket" sheet metal (from a 86) I know I will be doing a lot of hammering, bending, and shaping. As for the running condition of the car. It's like new. We know about the motor. The transmission you can't feel change into second gear. I tryed to feel it, but could not. I know it is. The engine isen't screaming at 40 MPH. So, the trans is running perfectly, the motor is running perfectly. So far, so good. I am off tomorrow, and I'll ckeck on the car over there later on in the day. He has the car until he can get his class to do the change over. So, Maybe I can at least have a look at the shock towers with the fenders off this weekend. Until next time.
04-27-12 The car is back here, with better tires (that match), great running motor and transmission, and rear that has good oil. So, now, before we start the body, we go back under for the exhaust. Muffler in piticular. It leaks at the inlet around the outside of the pipe. This should be next. Then, it's on to the body. The car at the Vo-Tech was nicely accepted by the students. They all were instructed by the teacher to take a look piticulary at the motor and the motor compartment. His lesson was to show the kids the simplicity of the motors and motor compartment from 50 years ago to todays. Along with the underbody, and the interiours of yesterday to today.
I stopped by in the late morning, The car was still on the lift, waiting for the next class to marvel at yesterdays mechanical wonders. It was very injoying to see these kids marvel at the car. A few, while I was there, talked to me a little. I heard comments like:
I left the car there, and picked it up later on in the late afternoon. Vic took me over to pick it up around 6:30. School was closed for the weekend. The tires are on, and I now have a spare. I asked the teacher how was the rims, and he said they were't that bad. They had to sand the rim edges a little because of rust, but nothing serious. The inside of the rims needed a little sanding too, but not that bad. I'm sorry I diden't have pictures. I was working today, and I diden't plan on stopping by. But, pictures of all the class huttled around the engine compartment would have made a nice picture for the web site-scrap book. That's it for now, tomorrow I have a few errands to do, and if I can, I'll check into the exhaust. I suppose this was the car's first educational outing, along with the tire changeing..... LOL... Sweet!. Till next time.
04-28-12 Well now, It was bound to happen.... The radiator is leaking at the bottom, where the corrosion is, all along the bottom. So, it's time to save for a radiator. It is possible that the heater core also leaks, not sure yet, as I can not see any drips or very wetness. I do feel dampness on the old carpet, could be from the dampness in the air, but I will investigate farther on the heater core as time goes by. But, for sure I need a radiator... Maybe I'll do the metal work on the front fire wall when I get a new radiator so I'm not changing hoses twice... I suppose, since it's it's cooler out, and not nice to lay on the ground working on the car. I'll locate a set of key blanks. I only have one set of keys. That is also on the agenda. Measure the muffler, and see what size it is for replacement. Was thinking of removing the muffler, and weld around the inlet nipple. That's where it's leaking from. The rest of the muffler looks good, and has no other holes. Cleaned up the inside today. removed the old tires from the back seat, and put away the 6th wheel for a later day. Cleaned out the paper containers from the materials I purchased for the motor. Put away all the rags and laying down blankets. Dampness.... That's it for today. Cover the car. Until the next time.... Happy Motoring!.
04-29-12 Today, we replaced the muffler and repaired a rather large leak in the pipe. Naturally, the called for muffler is un-known, and I had to see whats available, and choose. I chosen a #18630 Walker. This model has the proper hanging bracket, and all the right in/out proportions except the length. So, I used two adaptors, that I really diden't want to do because of cost, plus there are three clamps. But all in all, it looks good, and all is in the right place. It also sounds low frequency, like a 8!. I also installed the right outlet pipe on the tail. That is, a down outlet... On another note that took longer to do was to fix a pipe break just above the axel. Under a mounting and hanging bracket. I could not find the perfect sleve adaptor, but the next larger worked. The car sounds nice and low frequency "mellow" sounding. I am pleased with the outcome, but not the price. Oh well... On another note about the radiator: I see where the leak is, just about in the center, and a few inches from the bottom. That means, the leak is in the core. Not good for fixing myself.. I may be able to soder that tube closed. But, the plans are to get a new radiator. I found one, at the other parts store but will take a few days to get here. Have to save my money a bit. More on that later. Here's some pictures.
Thats it for now. I will be working for the next 5 days at my regular job, and I have a security camera connect up on Wednesday after my regular job. Most likely the weekend to work on the car. depending on if I get the rad or I remove the fenders. Don't know yet.
05-04-12 It's been a while. Working 5 days a week now. Seems the only time I have to work on the car is the weekends until day light gets longer into around 9PM. And the few hours I have when I get home. Allright, here's what's going on. I found a radiator and at all places from Advanced Auto parts. I ordered a 1965 Falcon, 3.3L, 200 motor. This radiator is the same except the mounting side flanges are about a inch and a half short. I will need to cut and make two side sister flanges, to extend the flanges for mounting. I don't think that will pose a problem. I plan to work on that tomorrow (saturday) after I do a small camera job... The question is, finding the right thickness metal to make the flanges. I'll have to check the scrap metal area to see what's available. I am sure I have something I can use, and it will work good. I will also be ordering a new gas tank. 274.00. as oposed to 300.00+ in other places. I found one, and it's kinda reasonable on price. I'll also have to order a new sender gasket. Just a couple of bucks for that. However, installing it won't take place until I get the rear quarters done. Speaking of rear quarters, I found them. And, they are for a 62 4 door... So, ordering them in a few weeks. 88.00 plus shipping. More on that when the time comes.
05-05-12 It was cloudy, but, no rain today. I was able to get the camera job done, and make the extended radiator flanges, and install the new radiator and, flush the motor water all today. 5 hours at it. It took a while to flush the motor, with the new radiator. This way, I was sure to get all the old water out, along with the brown color I think was from the original radiator. Now, there is water in the system. I will run the car a little bit, and in a couple of weeks, flush it again, and put anti freeze in. I'll be helping Vic with his car tomorrow. Will be removing the front fenders during the week if the time and weather allows. If not this week, The weekend... Now the real fun starts!. The body... When I finish the rear, that's when the new gas tank will go in. But until that time, it's prep the new gas tank. Paint it black, and order a new sender gasket. Now, it's on to the shock towers.
Here's a couple of pictures of what modifications I had to do to get the new radiator in. The differance in radiators are:
Sooo, all I had to do was to make extender flanges, and center, plus taking in account the fan span, adjust up-down, right-left of the radiator taking into account the width of the extender flanges... So, measuring, cutting, and sliding to find the right center, as the old one was. Plus, the skew from the fan, in-out. That is impostant as to keep the air flow the same as original to keep the motor cool.
05-06-12 Today, I drove the 62 around town... All day. Went over to Vic's to help him with his motor swap project. Driving the 62 today was nice. Got a lot of looks and comments. Also found out I need to replace the heater core also. But, I knew that back in my mind. I can use a 65 Galexy core, it's the same size except it's 1/2 inch thinner. I can shim around it. Advanced has them for 26.00... Will order one today, even though I haven't pulled the old one yet. Internet, and the shop manual indicates it's the right look, except it's 1/2 inch thinner. I am glad I flushed the rad system. Now I know, as I suspected, the heater core is leaking. Not bad, but still, leaking... Glad I used water and not anti freeze. Will replace the water with anti freeze once the new heater core is in. Should heat a lot better too. I was also thinking on ordering the rear bearings and seals. I should do tham as suggested by Vic. He knows his stuff, and I think I will check into them tomorrow as I order the heater core. Heater core is next, shock towers-body still in waiting. Maybe the rear bearings and seals... Thats it for this weekend. Working all week. Mught be able to do the heater core in the middle of the week. Seems the heater core is accessible from under the hood. Acording to the shop manual. Open door, open plastic locks, slide out, slide new in, repeat process... yea, we'll see more on that later.... See ya next time!.
05-08-12 Today, after I got home from work, I started to see about removing the heater assembly and the heater core. It wasen't that bad, but, I have to remove the glove box lining as not to damage it re installing the heater, and be able to duct tape the inlet.. Now, removing the core form the heater wasen't bad either. There are 4 screws on the fire wall, removing these screws the heater comes out. You will also need to remove the control cables and the large blower connector. After replacing the core, put the cover back on, and re install it. Connect the hoses, and your set. Re fill the radiator and there should be no more age leaking problems with the total cooling/heating system.
One of the factors the heater core went bad, and the radiator even though the car sat for 33 years with the rad drained, was there was no anti freeze in the system. Air and moisture eat away at the core, year after year. Anti freeze, has non corrosion agents in it, and if the coolant was in there, just as they put the car into the garage it probally would still be good. Even 33 years ago, the anti freeze back then had lubing agents in it to help stop corrosion against the heater core and the radiator. Well, The heater core hasen't arrived yet, and hopefully, tomorrow it will. But I still have to locate some insulation against the fire wall. It is soaked, and black, and from being wet even back then, as I think the heater leaked, the installation is deteriated. As you move it around there are particales from it air borne. The installation is dry rotted, wet and damp. It needs to come out to be replaced, and, the inside fire wall needs to be cleaned, sanded, and painted. I will do that before the heater goes back in. I will also do that to the heater houseing. When both are dry it will go back in. If not, I will do the painting when I paint the whole car. Not sure yet. But it will make painting the whole car a bit easier. Thats it for now, until next time...
05-09-12 Now, we have the heater re-installed with a new heater core. The new heater core came with spacing tape foam. They are used when using a smaller size heater core. I spaced them, and re-installed the heater. Works perfect, and the heat is great. No more fogging up the windshield, and will be a lot warmer too next winter. Ordered a new gas tank today. Pricy.... Whew!.. That took a lot of holding my breath. Had to save for that purchase. The new gas tank will be going in after the rear is done. For now, the old will do as it drips a few drops every few days or so. Make no mistake though it will get worse as time goes by, espically now with gas swishing around in there. More later on... Chow!
05-12-12 Hi-ya everyone... Since the freeze plugs have been in, and since the heater core has been replaced, the coolent pressure is present, I have discovered MORE freeze plugs that need replacing. They are "weaping" coolant. Now, guess where they are?. Behind the exhaust manifold!. That means I have to remove the exhaust manifold.... Hmmm, yea. I drove the car practically all weekend, and during the week. That means the manifold (and bolts) had many times of expansion and contracting. Now, I will be hitting all the bolts with penetrating stuff. "DB Blaster". I will be doing that several times a day until around Saturday or Sunday. I will try to remove the manifold bolts, removing the manifold, and see what size the freeze plugs are. They are small one's. About the size of a nickle. So, that means, we don't start the body yet. I am planning on attending the Gentilini car show in Woodbine NJ, the way the car is. I have been encuraged by several friends to take the car there the way it is and have some fun with it the way it is. Should get all kinds of comments. I will also try to video, and pictures. before the show, I would like to get the freeze plugs changed. Once the manifold is off, It shoulden't take too long to replace them. I plan to use stanless steel bolts to replace the old manifold bolts. make it easier for next time. That's it for now. Till next time.
05-13-12 This morning before I ran my errands, I Sprayed the exhaust manifold bolts with Blaster... Couple hours later, I sprayed again, couple hours later I sprayed again, and a few hours later I sprayed even again.... About a hour after that when I got home, I desided to see if any would budge. The first came out, second, and so on. Not too much trouble. NONE broke!... At that point I said self, "Let's go for it". I removed the pipe bolts, and droped the manifold. I started to remove those 4 little freezout plugs. The middle one gave me some trouble. But, They all came out. Again, I sanded around the hole, flushed, and I am now preped for the new. The old bolts looked a bit sad, so I drove to Home Depot to purchase some new bolts, and lock washers. I did. A little longer, but with two lock washers should be good. Tomorrow, after I get back from my appointments, I'll go over and get the freeze out plugs and put them in, and re install the manifold. Till next time...
05-14-12 Today I found the right freeze plugs for up under the exhaust manifold. I taped them in. 2 of them are leaking, rather badly... okay, so here's the deal... The two front holes seemed to be missing peaices of the "curve" where the plug rests in place. The back two were better, as in condition. I seem to think rust has eaten away the curve for the plugs. I started the car, and let it run to heat up the motor thinking the plugs will expand and the leak will stop. It did. However, once the rad cap was on now the pressure builds... leak again. As the motor heated up more, the stream stopped. So, it was basicly, stop and start with the leaking. Maybe they will seal maybe they worn't... Thinking, won't, but let's be hopeful. So, if not, I have a plan... Cutting (like a washer) out of a peice of electrical plate, drilling a hole for a small self tapper screw. Fill the freeze plug with hi temp RTV, and drilling the self tapper into the center of the plug. Squeezing the plate in, and squeezing the RTV out the holes making a seal. let set for 24 hours and see what we get. I will have to remove the exhaust manifold again, and hopefully the gasket will still be good, as it is a new gasket... So, now, we wait and see what expansion, non-expansion does, and then on a better day, if expansion don't work, we remove the manifold and do the fix... The body is still in waiting, but I have the patching metal, and the welder on stand by. Until next time.....
05-17-12 Seems there is a little delay... Advanced has Dorman freeze plugs. There are 4 listed for 1 inch. I can not find out what size MM that is supposed to be in there. So, I ordered the first size. Too small... The second size is on the way. Won't be here at the latest, Monday. The gas tank arrived yesterday. Looks exact like the original... That will be after I get the body work finished... Speaking of body work. I found a company that has lower 1/4's, and they are in stock. I purchased both sides should be here in the middle of the week. I have to make the rounded part (for behind the bumper) and the trunk, and the wheelwell walls in between... I have collected good metal for that, and there is more over at a friends house. For now, we wait for the plugs....
05-19-12 The box of freeze out plugs came today. Glad I did get the box because I needed them. replacing these plugs on the car was a challange. The two fronts went in good, not too much trouble getting in there, but the 3rd from the front was a bugger.... Out of 10 plugs, there are two left. Yes, they all leaked, and finally, we figured out the problem. getting them straight in the first place.
Because the head is slanted, you have to have the plug with the scoket slanted with the head so they go in straight. Difficult to do with the head on the car... if your doing this you have to:
Then, you have access to the plugs. After old ones removed, clean, and use emmery cloth and make sure all of the old is out. There is NO ridge inside. So clean good... So, they are in and there are no leaks, and no oozing.. Should stay that way. Will check tomorrow. The radiator is full, ran the car around town, let cool. No leaking, topped radiator, ran the car again. parked for the night, tomorrow I will check again.
Taking the car to the Gentlini Ford car Show on the 2nd. I am also repairing (or trying) to repair a old commercial singer sewing machine for a older guy whom used to do upholstery, back in the 60's and 70's. I fix his machine, he will do my seats. So, in the time from now to the car show, I will be working on that. I need to get the model number and get the manual for it to see if I can fix. I don't want to have the car's body apart for the show. I better see about his machine. It will be worth the extra effort to fix. I also need to get together the body tools I need. While I am waiting for the show and after I'll be getting together body tools, and getting his machine working right. If so, I will remove the seats while I work on the body. Be a good idea to remove the seats anyway since I'll be welding around the rear doors and under. No sparks should get on the seats, or sides of the seats... So, until next time....
