I suppose it's that time of year....

It's That Time Of Year

Well, they have passed at least for a little while. But they will be back... LOL.... Here's some progress pictures. These are a 4 day event, as the rounded end, and the inside partitions did take some time. Still, more to go for the inside, as the wheel well, and the dog leg has to be done. But, this is where we are at.

We have the 1/4 cut out and placing in the new one. Using it as a measurement templet for now. Will be welded, and I plan to try soulder (The old fashioned way) too, but, with todays metals might not work out. We shall see.... But that is later.

Making a paper templet for height of the inside wheel well curtains. Don't know if I will use it or not, but good to have if needed.

This is a difficult area. This area that is about 5 inches by 6 inches. Took me several days to prep and start the correct banding, and as we are doing this, keep with the original design and shapes.

I had to do all of this area my eye, making sure the curve, and the points are the same... Looks good. It will stay this way until the final covering goes on.

Used several metal peices for complete this area.

Ahhhh, getting there.... Some places I will need to use Bondo.

Finishing touches on the little triangular peice. In place, and looks good.

The inside partition, at least half of it. The other 1/2 is on, and we got as far as to the wheel well.

62's Trunk Quarters Work Vid 06

Yesterday was a nice day. Got a LOT done on the quarter area. But, not done yet... The pocket partition done, the inside wheel well done. I started to make the doglegs. After checking it out for a while, I desided I can do better. Sunday I had some stuff going on, and the threat of rain. In the late afternoon, sun was out, and I desided to try making better doglegs. I think I sucedded. I used the passinger side as a hammering templet, and made better doglegs, still in there coarse form. But, the lines and the shape are better pronounced.

No pictures of the second try, maybe during the week. I have to shape them more in the vice, and check and re-check. These doglegs are going to take a while before I am happy with putting them on the car, but, I am happier with the second better than the first.

It's now time for a disc sander, and I had a older Craftsman grinder, that I had to fix, and convert to a sander. I did that Sunday. During the week, if I feel good after working all day I'll take a shot at the new doglegs for re fining the legs before I put them in. Here's some pictures of this weekends work. Video will follow during the week. It's in the editing stage.

Made the corner turn. In 62, these were boxed in. In 63 I think they were open but the quarter is the same for 62. So, a little extra work to box in the area.

Bigger Pic?. Click it.

Same as the wall, this was also boxed in. Seam sealer, oh yes, inside and out will follow.

Let's weld both in. Welding as best to keep water out. Seal yes.

This are is the inside the wheel well. This complete area, including the rocker panel support had to be replaced. Quite a rust away this area was. Road salt in PA did most of this I am sure.

62's Trunk Quarters Work Vid 07

All week, on and off, rain, and also working on the car after work for a few hours.... Fabricated the drivers dogleg, installed it, and went on to continueing on the wheel wells. They are almost completed. Need to scrape off some of the undercoating, weld in the 1/4, and apply the Bondo. That is after I weld in the 1/4. Hopefully, I can complete that this week, or weekend. I am hoping to get that done. Here are pictures and a video of this weeks work on this car...

I have abondend the solder use. Why?. I investigated the differance between solder and plastic (bondo) and I found that even the cheaper can of Bondo is better than solder. Why?. Because today's plastics has better bonding polimures, and shapes, and sticks, much better than solder. I tryed a spot, and now I know why it's a lost art. besides the plastics being a better product for auto body work. It took a long time for plastics in auto body to develop, and today's is way better than the 1970's, and even 1980's.

Even solder was never ment to "fill" a hole, it was ment to smooth a freshly welded in metal hole, and the same is with body plastics. However, there is one differance that also effects the plastic on the car. That is, how much hardner you use. It is better to have the plastic "pinkish" rather than red, meaning, less hardner. If the plastic hardends too hard, vibration, weather and other factors effect falling out or cracking. Solder also cracks, so does lead, but plastics have a better breathing point.
